Every second house in the older Waverley streets still has its original paths: a narrow ribbon down the side, a front walk that has heaved at every joint, steps that have parted company with the porch. Side strips that earn their keep
The strip between house and fence works harder than any other surface on the block. It is the wheelbarrow route, the bin run and the rain path, and the sixty year old version is usually cracked, mossy and draining towards the house. We pour side access at full path specification with the fall worked out first, so water travels to the yard or the street instead of pooling against the stumps or slab. Where the strip meets a garage slab or the driveway, levels are matched so there is no trip step.
Front paths and entries
The walk from the street sets up the whole house, and it is a small enough pour that the premium finishes stay affordable. Plenty of front paths go down in exposed aggregate to match a new drive, and a broom finished path with clean edges still beats pavers on maintenance every year it is down. Steps, porch landings and letterbox pads get formed into the same pour.
Poured to last, like everything else
A path gets the same construction discipline as a driveway, scaled to the load: ground cleared and compacted, mesh through the slab, 75mm minimum thickness rising to 100mm at vehicle crossings, and joints cut where movement wants to happen. The smart move is bundling: a path added to a driveway or patio pour shares the mobilisation, the pump and the crew, and prices accordingly. Old path out first adds $35 per m².
