A shed is only as good as the concrete it stands on. Kit suppliers are blunt about this in their fine print: get the slab wrong, out of square, out of level or under thickness, and the frame will not go together and the warranty walks. So we treat the slab as the first stage of the building, not as a pad of concrete that happens to be shed-shaped.
Poured to the drawings
When a shed or garage arrives with documentation, the slab is set out from it exactly: overall dimensions checked diagonal to diagonal, rebates and plinths formed where the frame wants them, and hold-down points placed to the millimetre so the erectors’ bolts land where the holes are. When there are no drawings, we size the slab to the structure and the use, and both paths end with the same thing in your quote: thickness, mesh grade and set-out dimensions in writing.
Thickness by use, not by habit
Under the specification, outbuilding slabs are sized by what will sit on them. A mower-and-bikes garden shed runs 100mm with SL72 mesh. A garage, workshop or studio steps up to 125mm with SL82, with thickened edges where the drawings ask, because cars, hoists and machine benches concentrate load in ways a lawn locker never will. Sixties garages around Mount Waverley and Oakleigh were routinely poured at 75mm with no steel at all, which is why so many of them have a floor like a dry creek bed.
Access, and pouring in the backyard
Most shed slabs live behind the house, and the concrete has to get there. At the measure we look at the side access honestly: wheelbarrow runs, pump line over the roof, or a bigger day with a line pump for the back corner of a Wheelers Hill block. Whatever the method, it appears in the quote as a line, not on pour day as a surprise. Pairing the slab with a side strip or driveway work uses the access setup twice and prices better.
