Every replacement job starts with a demolition, and doing that first half badly poisons the second. Old concrete around the Waverley suburbs is six decades of thin pours, no steel and clay movement, and getting it out cleanly, without wrecking the crossover, the neighbour’s fence line or the services underneath, is a trade skill of its own.
What the removal covers
One line, $35 per square metre, everything included: saw cutting the edges so the break stays inside the job, machine or hand breaking to suit access, loading, carting and recycler fees. Pavers, old asphalt and garden slab all price the same way. The number rides on top of whichever new surface is going down, and both figures sit separately on the quote so you can see each half of the job plainly.
Careful around what stays
Break-out is controlled work, not wrecking. Cuts isolate the old slab from anything staying put: the neighbour’s half of a shared drive, the porch, the garage floor, the council’s kerb. Underground services get located before machinery touches the ground, and around the crossover we work to Monash’s rules, since the council owns that strip and expects it treated that way. Fences, gardens and the letterbox are still standing when we leave.
The ground under the old slab
Lifting the concrete shows you the real story: usually a few sad centimetres of base, sometimes bare clay, occasionally builder’s rubble from 1968. That inspection is the whole reason replacement outperforms patching. The ground gets corrected before anything new is poured, built up and compacted to the specification, so the new surface starts from a foundation the old one never had.
