Exposed aggregate has become the default premium surface out here for a simple reason: a stone finish looks chosen instead of merely poured, holds grip underfoot in the wet, and hides the dust and leaf-stain that show on plain grey within a month.

What the finish actually is

Exposed aggregate is not a topping or a coating. The decorative stone is batched through the entire load, the slab is poured and levelled like any other, and then the top millimetres of cement paste are washed away at precisely the right moment to reveal the stone beneath. Once cured, the surface takes a penetrating sealer that deepens the colour and shrugs off oil and tannin. Because the stone runs full depth, the finish cannot delaminate or wear through.

Choosing stone in your own light

The blend makes or breaks the job, and it has to be chosen against the actual house. At the site measure the sample boards come out of the ute and go on the ground where the concrete will live: lighter quartz blends against brick, storm and charcoal mixes under the grey-on-white palettes of the new builds, warm river pebble where a garden does the talking. The base colour of the cement shifts each blend again, which is one more reason photographs are not how this decision gets made.

Where it earns its money

Driveways are the headline act, and the same surface keeps going: front entries and porch steps, paths that turn a side run into something deliberate, alfresco and barbecue areas, and pool surrounds where the built-in grip matters as much as the look. Running one blend across drive, entry and path ties a frontage together, and pouring them in one visit is cheaper than three separate mobilisations.

The band is $130-$185 per square metre laid and sealed, with the stone selection driving most of the spread. A typical 40 m² single drive lands between $5,200 and $7,400; entries and paths ride cheaper on the same pour. If old concrete has to come out first, add $35 per m². Why does exposed aggregate cost more than plain concrete?

The mix itself costs more because it is batched with selected decorative stone, and the finish takes more labour on the day, a surface retarder, a wash-off at exactly the right hour and a seal coat once cured. How do I pick the stone?

From physical sample boards at the site measure, held on your driveway in your light next to your brick and your render. Photographs flatten stone badly, which is why we never ask you to choose from a phone. Blends run from creamy quartz through mixed river pebble to dark basalt.

Is it slippery around a pool?

The opposite. The exposed stone gives the surface constant fine texture, which is why so many Monash pool surrounds and sloping driveways are finished this way. We match the sealer to the use, with a slip-resistant additive where water is part of the picture.

How do I look after it?

Hose it when it looks dusty and keep harsh chemicals off it. The sealer wants renewing somewhere in the three to five year window, sun and traffic depending, a straightforward maintenance visit we can quote when the time comes.
