An outdoor floor, built like one

An alfresco slab is a floor that lives outside, and we build it to floor standards: base compacted, steel through the pour, thickness to suit the load, and edges formed clean where they will stay exposed. Falls get designed first so water sheds away from the sliding door and the house itself, never towards them, with a strip drain formed in where a covered area or a low threshold needs one. Finishes that live outdoors

Most entertaining slabs leave us in one of three surfaces: broom finished grey for a clean utility area, full depth colour where the slab should sit quietly under furniture and pots, or exposed aggregate where the patio is the feature. Matching the patio blend to a new driveway pulls the whole block together, and pouring both in one visit is meaningfully cheaper than two bookings.

Plan the structure before the pour

The best time to think about shade is before the concrete arrives. Pergola posts, spa pads, outdoor kitchens and pizza ovens all put point loads on a slab, and each one is easy to allow for in the formwork and steel if we know on measure day. The quote spells out exactly what the slab is engineered to carry so the next trade can build on it without surprises.

The money

Patios and alfresco areas run $100-$180 per square metre. Old pavers or a tired slab coming out first adds $35 per m² with disposal included. What will an alfresco slab cost?

$100-$180 per square metre by finish. The popular 4 x 6 metre entertaining area, 24 m², prices between $2,400 and $4,300 poured, and taking out old pavers first adds $35 per m². Guide rates until the job is measured; the written quote after the visit is the number we hold to.

Can the slab take a pergola or roof later?

Tell us at the measure and we will build for it. Posts need footings or thickened slab zones in the right places, and pouring them now costs a fraction of cutting them in later. Bring the pergola plan to the measure if one exists, even roughly.

Which finish handles outdoor dining best?

Exposed aggregate and broom finishes give grip when the slab is wet and hide the traffic of a real backyard. Smooth trowelled surfaces look sharp under cover but get slick in rain, so we typically reserve them for roofed areas. Samples at the measure settle it against your house.

Will rain run off it or sit on it?

It runs off, because the falls are designed before the pour, away from the house and the door track, to lawn, garden or a drain formed into the slab. A puddled patio is a set-out failure, and set-out is the first thing we do on pour day.
